Mr. George Hayth
Dear George:

The enclosed little knife Uncle Ed Hayth took from a Yankee *unreadable* distinction of bringing in the first trophy of war. *unreadable* private, for this galantry, he was promoted from private to second lieutenant of the company. He brought it home from the war of 1861. Mamma kept it for years and now I think one of Uncle Ed's children should have it. I am sending it to you and will you please send it to Will in Clifton and see the right person gets it. I'll *unreadable* you more later.
