A 1936 Roanoke College graduate, Pete Brewbaker was a towering figure inLexington athletics. He compiled a record of 224 victories, 90 losses andeight ties as a football coach. Until 1960, he was the only head coach ofthe Lexington basketball, baseball and track and field programs.

Pete Brewbaker founded Lexington High's golf program and won VirginiaHigh School League state championships in 1968, 1975 and 1976. In 1977,he was named one of eight national golf coaches of the year by theNational High School Athletic Coaches Association.

Brewbaker also helped found the Lexington Recreation Department in 1946and was its director until 1987. He was instrumental in the constructionof an asphalt track at the high school in 1962, the first of its kind inVirginia.

During his service in the Navy in World War II, Brewbaker taught survivaltraining techniques to pilots. One of Brewbaker's co-instructors was Paul"Bear" Bryant, who became a legendary college football coach at theUniversity of Alabama.

Brewbaker was a founding member of the Virginia High School CoachesAssociation and was the group's second president in 1957-58. His onlyother coaching job was a two-year stint as the head football coach atWilliam Fleming from 1936-37.
